“Fall’s a great time to plant native trees, shrubs and perennials, and Johnson’s Nursery has a great selection and long history of growing all three,” says Lisa Gaumnitz, SOS Save Our Songbirds coordinator. “We’re happy to foster more people adding native plants good for birds and benefit Wild Ones Madison at the same time!”

SOS Save Our Songbirds is an action campaign launched in Wisconsin in 2023 to help spur more people to take three steps at home to help birds. Adding a few native plants that are good for birds, preventing birds from colliding with a problem window, and buying coffee grown in ways that protect our birds’ winter habitats are the three actions. The campaign is a volunteer-based, donation-based campaign and an initiative of the Wisconsin Bird Conservation Partnership.

Amy Yocum, Madison Wild Ones president, notes that "native plants and natural landscapes thriving in every community - this is the vision of Wild Ones!”

“We’re committed to sharing resources and educating communities in order to heal our land and support the ecosystems under threat from habitat loss and climate change,” she says. “We’d like to thank Save Our Songbirds and Johnson's Nursery for partnering with us, and to you all for caring for the land."

Once the sale goes live Aug. 1, people must order through Johnson’s special ecommerce site to make sure their plants get to the right site and credited to Wild Ones Madison. During checkout, when filling out the “shipping” section select “Wild Ones-Madison Chapter” and pickup site “3030 Gateway, Madison, WI 53704” in the “shipping” section. More details coming soon to the Madison Wild Ones website.
